Get to know Mr. Shaw:

I've been at Streamwood High School since 2011 and in U-46 since 2008. I love working with students and families to help navigate high school and beyond. Music is a huge passion of mine. I love playing guitar, have been in bands on and off since I graduated from college, and co-sponsor the Streamwood High School Guitar Club with Mr. Powell. I used to work at a social service agency (360 Youth Services in Naperville), and before that I worked for a small record label, where one of my proudest acheivements was writing the liner notes to the Paul Robeson - Peace Arch Concerts album.  I live in an old home from the late 1800's, and because of this have learned how to do electric wiring, carpentry, and lots of home maintenance. Reading is another of my favorite things to do. My wife and I also enjoy gardening and spending time with our three cats.

Ms. Guerrero is new to Streamwood y se habla espanol.  This is my first year at Streamwood High School and I am super excited to be a part of the community! I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of educational settings, ranging from elementary schools to adult transition services. As a first generation graduate, I am especially passionate about empowering students to prepare for their futures, explore different pathways, and become the best versions of themselves. I am also bilingual in English and Spanish, which allows me to better connect with and support students and families. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time outdoors, being with family and friends, and trying new foods from different cultures.

School counselors have a curriculum! All school counselors, nationwide, in U-46, and at Streamwood High School strive to provide Academic, Collge / Career, and  Social-Emotional support for all students. This means we're helping you on the road to graduation, guiding you to your next destination (graduation and your plan for after graduation), and helping if you get a little off course. 

Professional School counselors advocate for students in 3 main areas. We support students academically through choosing classes, monitoring grades, and bridging communication between students and teachers, we are trained professionals to provide social-emotional support, and we help prepare students with an appropriate post-secondary plan. We often use the term post-secondary which is another way to say after high school. Various examples of post-secondary options are listed on this slide. We work with our students to ensure they’re aware of all options and the steps needed for each.

• FAFSA Information

  The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Completion of the FAFSA is required by the State of Illinois for graduation.

  We have been told that for the 2023-2024 school year, the FAFSA will be available by December 31st. 

  Students and families will have three options for FAFSA completion in 2-24. (1) the FAFSA itself, which is preferred, (2) the alternative application for Illinois financial aid, which Illinois makes available for students and families who cannot complete a FAFSA, or (3) a waiver families can complete if they refuse to complete the FAFSA or alternative application. Please note one of the three MUST be completed for students to be able to graduate with the class of 2024.

• Getting Help

  We know that the FAFSA (and any financial information) can bring up lots of questions. Your SHS counselors have all received some training on the FAFSA and are happy to help.

  In addition, we have a great partner in ISAC - the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, whose mission is to Provide Illinois students with information and assistance to help make education beyond high school accessible and affordable.

  ISAC offers workshops on FAFSA completion and provides Streamwood High School with a dedicated representative who is available to answer questions about the FAFSA and provide expert assistance.

  These are chances to work with our ISAC rep. Ms.Benetiz  can help to better understand what the FAFSA is, what it requires, how it works, and how to complete the FAFSA or the Alternative Illinois Application for Financial Aid. 

  When it’s time to complete the FAFSA, you can also visit http://www.isac.org to locate a FAFSA completion workshop near your home or school. All workshops listed are open to the public at no fee.

• Completing the FAFSA 

  Completing the FAFSA - the Free Application for Federal Student Aid - can seem intimidating, but here are some steps to start with and make it simpler! 

  • The student will need an FSA ID account – create it at https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch?continueTo=fafsa and use your PERSONAL E-mail (not your school one!).  You will use this FSA ID account every year you complete the FAFSA
  • The Parent (and ideally the parent who files the family taxes) will need a separate FSA ID. Note - they may already have one for an older sibling. Again – create (or look up) at https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch?continueTo=fafsa
  • The reason both student and parent need an account is to sign the FAFSA application at the end of the process.
  • Once your accounts are created, go to:  http://www.fafsa.gov

   

  The following year's FAFSA is available to complete every year after Oct 1.  Remember to complete the for the year you will be starting college (not the current year). Either the parent or student can fill out the FAFSA.  Completing the FAFSA means both the child and the parent's income is reported.  Both parent and student must sign electronically.

  To complete FAFSA or the Alternative Application, you'll need

  • Family tax return
  • The student info, including birthdate, social security number (or Alien Registration Number, if student is not a U.S. Citizen) , driver's license (if applicable). 
  • The parents' info, including birthdates, social (if applicable), marriage date. Parents who do not have a SSN must enter 000-00-0000
  • The prior year's federal tax returns, W-2s, and other records of income
  • Banking statements and records of investments (if applicable)
  • Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
  • List of colleges student would like to attend (whether you've applied or not - you'll want to list these on the FAFSA)

  Once the FAFSA is complete, it looks at YOUR (student's) and PARENTS income. Then it determines ability of student / family to pay, then generates an EFC - Estimated Family Contribution. This is how much government "thinks" your family can afford to pay every year for college. The college then creates a financial aid package and tries to make up the difference with scholarships, grants (both of which are free money), work study (which you should do) and loans - both subsidized and unsubsidized, You can reduce the loans you take out with private scholarships. Private scholarships are generally awarded on merit - either academic accomplishments, volunteering, or extra-curricular involvement.

  Once you have completed the FAFSA, you may be selected for a process called verification. Do not be alarmed, this is a common process used by colleges and universities to confirm that the data on the FAFSA is correct. You may be asked to submit additional documentation. Provide only the information requested and be sure to submit it on time.

Undocumented Student Resources

• Streamwood High School's Counseling Department works with all students regardless of citizenship status. We know every students' story is different, and often students haven't had a say in how their story has been written. We share the following resources with the goal of helping students begin to determine their own future

  The United States Department of Education's resource guide on how educators, schools, and campuses can better support secondary and postsecondary undocumented students. The guide includes:

  •  Information on DACA (the federal government’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program)
  • A list of scholarships available to students regardless of their immigration status
  • A list of federally funded adult education programs
  • Best practices for schools to follow
     

  Financing College for Undocumented Students

   

   DACA students and the FAFSA.  As a general policy, ISAC (the Illinois Student Assistance Comission) recommends that Illinois DACA students not complete the FAFSA as they are still ineligible for federal or Illinois state aid. Ideally, a college which provides need based aid to an undocumented student will utilize an institutional financial aid form to capture a student’s financial data. However, as colleges are permitted to require DACA students to complete the FASA, many do. If a DACA students completes the FAFSA, the student must be sure to answer all questions accurately. The student should use the DACA social security number and when completing the question, “Are you a U.S. citizen?” the student should check “No, I am not a citizen or eligible non-citizen.” An EFC will not be calculated but the form will capture their financial information, which will be transmitted to colleges who can then do their own calculation. Here is a link to REALLY good information about this from the US Department of Education https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/ sites/default/files/financial- aid-and-undocumented-students. pdf

   

  DDLR Scholarship fund  - This scholarship is intended to assist undocumented youth/DREAMers from the Chicagoland area in reaching their dream of attending a four year college or university. For more information about the scholarship and/or requirements, please visit www.ddlrscholarship.org.   There is an FAQ section at the end of the application. It is best if students have all the requirement already saved when submitting their application as there is no way to save the? application in progress. If you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to reach out.

Transcripts

• Transcripts are your academic record of classes taken and grades and credits earned. Transcripts show the classes you have taken, the grades you have earned, and calculate both your Grade Point Average and Class Rank.  Transcripts will include the SAT score for the school based SAT students take during their Junior Year. If students wish to send additional test scores to a college, they must do some themselves through either College Board for SAT or ACT Student for the ACT.

  Transcripts are the primary record considered for college and graduate school admissions, as well as a record of what you accomplished academically in high school. Transcript requests fall into two categories:  Transcripts for Current Students and Transcripts for Graduates.
